What do we mean when we use the terms "God," "Self" and "Ego"? To what experiences do these terms point? What are the relationships between them? This book by Philip St. Romain, M.S., D. Min., goes beyond semantics to provide an experiential approach to understanding "God," "Self" and "Ego." It also situates this understanding in an anthropology that will be agreeable to most psychologists and Christian spiritual directors. Different "zones of intimacy" between God, Self and Ego are identified, each with differing requirements.

I love the book. As a pastor and a professor of theology, I frequently recommend the book to church members and students. In fact, I currently lead a small group of 12 people who have complete all but the last chapter and have routinely praise it along the way.

Here is what I love about the book. Phil St. Romain has provided a much needed theoretical "map" for the spiritual journey and also practical exercises and spiritual disciplines that help us move along the path. Deeply rooted in Christian spirituality, St. Romain helps us to understand the "zones of consciousness," including the God-Self, Self-Ego, and Ego-God relationships as well as the dangers of "false self conditioning." St. Romain has a clear understanding of what authentic spirituality is and how to get there. Without doubt, I believe St. Romain's "map" (or something else like it) is necessary for the development of healthy psycho-spiritual functioning.

The book is written in an easy to understand, conversation style, but don't let that fool you. St. Romain has drawn from some of the best theologians and spiritual masters, such as Bernard Lonergan, Theresa of Avila, and John of the Cross. He conjoins that with insights from the psychology of Carl Jung and Roberto Assagioli. Although St. Romain does not especially deal with biblical theology, his model coheres well with the Gospels and Pauline theology and psychology.
